children are born bad but they can become bad, and it was easily
achieved when they grew up on the aptly named Brattend estate. Built on
the outskirts of Wandwell by the local authority to cater for Londonís
slum clearance and relocation programme, by 1985 it had evolved into
being beyond the comprehension of most people. Only by actually
residing on this estate was it possible to appreciate how the
people there lived.
all of the Brattend estateís working-age people were unemployed. They
lived off benefits and whatever they could obtain in other ways,
most of them criminal. Burglary, prostitution, shoplifting, drugs,
black-market booze, and tobacco products put the clothes on their back
and food on the table for most of the youngsters. However, there were
always a few children who went short and felt hungry.
short and knowing hunger can sometimes result in kids becoming
attracted to the dark side. To obtain the things they want, and in many
cases believe they need in order to survive, they will venture way
beyond anything considered acceptable by their peers.
